Press Release
(issued 3/15/2003)

Finding a pet-friendly rental property can be difficult and time-consuming, making man’s best friend seem as welcome as ants at a picnic.  No one knows this better than petrent.net founder Peter Monaco. Peter and his Labrador retriever, Sam, have moved more than a dozen times during Sam’s nine years, so he knows that finding an apartment or a house to rent can be incredibly frustrating.  That’s why Peter created petrent.net.

Petrent.net specializes in finding rentals that allow pets.  It is not an agency, but a listing company with a rapidly growing network of property owners and rental agents that welcome pets.  On average, petrent.net lists about 50 properties each week all over several US cities, with options in many sizes, styles, and price ranges.  The listings are available to petrent.net members via a “member’s only” page at www.petrent.net or in a weekly mailer.  A 90-day membership is only $69, and most of clients find housing within the first month of their membership.

“If an apartment or house is available and the property owners will allow pets, it will be on our list,” Peter says with absolute confidence.  He notes that landlords can list with petrent.net for free, and they return to petrent.net because of their positive tenant experiences in the past.  Perhaps most importantly, petrent.net does some of the pre-sorting for them.  As one landlord said, “I would only rent to someone with pets if they come to me through you guys.  If they're not willing to purchase your service, this probably means they're not willing to do other things they should be doing for their pets and that is exactly the type of irresponsible pet owner landlords fear renting to.”  Landlords also praise petrent.net for providing each member with a booklet that educates tenants about the concerns of property owners and provides sample pet-related agreements.

According to the Humane Society of the United States, "four to five million cats and dogs are euthanized every year in this country, and “landlord won't allow” is among the top reasons given by pet owners when relinquishing their dogs or cats to animal shelters.  If more rental housing permitted pets, millions of dogs and cats could be placed in homes," meaning fewer pets will be killed each year. As Peter Monaco puts it, “There is no reason why any pet’s heart has to be broken by being left behind at an animal shelter for any reason, let alone that pet-friendly housing can’t be found.  Our mission is simply to make that number lower."
